A GROUP of specially recruited soldiers in the British army are about to find out that modern warfare is more than just a Call of Duty game.
Formally commencing in April, the 77th Brigade will be a 1,500-strong unit established with the purpose of engaging in cyber warfare.
It is expected soldiers with journalism backgrounds, familiarity with social media and skills in psychological operations will be among those sought out for the project.
The aim of the “Facebook warriors” will be to control the narrative amid 24-hour news cycles available on smartphones, tablets and social media.
“77th Brigade is being created to draw together a host of existing and developing capabilities essential to meet the challenges of modern conflict and warfare,” an army spokesman told the Guardian.
“It recognises that the actions of others in a modern battlefield can be affected in ways that are not necessarily violent.”
Specialised groups to deal with digital warfare are nothing new, with both the Israeli and US army already engaged heavily in psychological operations.
The Israel Defence Forces are considered pioneers of cyber warfare with dedicated teams active on 30 social media platforms since 2008.
