India will take any success but Mohammad Nabi’s gallant ensemble from strife-torn Afghanistan is a far cry from facing estranged neighbour Pakistan.

World Cup debutant Afghanistan was never supposed to trouble MS Dhoni’s men who plundered 5-364 on a belter track before prevailing by 153 runs.

Yet, Afghanistan wasn’t overpowered in a 211 riposte.

An effortless 150 (122) from Rohit masked an ongoing top-order funk and unremarkable bowling ahead of India’s World Cup opener against Pakistan on Sunday in Adelaide.

Opener Shikhar Dhawan (4), Virat Kohli (5) and skipper MS Dhoni (10) need to find touch and fast. The trio contrast with Rohit, who conjured memories of his record high, one-day score of 264 against Sri Lanka last November.

An attack which conceded 371 against Australia on Sunday found it tough going against Afghanistan’s quality batsmen in young opener Usman Ghani (44) and former skipper Nawroz Mangal (60). India was also sloppy in the field, grassing three catches.

Asghar Stanikzai’s exit for 20 to Mohit Sharma (2-40) triggered a 4-16 collapse off 29 deliveries.

Earlier, Rohit’s ton was total domination with 12 fours and seven sixes during stands of 158 with Suresh Raina (75) and 95 with undefeated Ajinkya Rahane (88).

India exceeded 200 just once in a winless tri-series and enjoyed one opening stand over 50. The top order looks shaky, a worrying addition to a lack-lustre attack where lively Umesh Yadav (1-35) remains the primary threat.

Kohli led from the front as India’s new skipper in the Border-Gavaskar Test series with 692 runs at 86.5. However the return of Dhoni as one-day captain has seen Kohli muster scores of 9, 4, 3 not out, 8 and 18 and 3 this 50-over summer.

Dhawan is yet to click here, averaging 27 in three Tests then 12 over four tr- series games against England and Australia. The left-hander rebounded with 58 against Australia on Sunday before failing again on Tuesday.

Dhoni averaged 23 in the tri-series followed by scores of 0 and 10 in the warm ups against Australia and Afghanistan. The veteran keeper-batsman will have to turn it on when it counts as he did in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka.

Impressive Hamid Hassan (1-49) sported a multi-colour team hand-band that evoked memories of the Dennis Lillee era and bowled Dhawan. Zadram (1-66) claimed Kolhi for 3 edging to keeper Zazai.

Raina is finding touch but has been run out in consecutive practice matches, on Saturday by David Warner and on Tuesday by a direct hit from Nabi. The Afghanistan skipper raced in from midwicket to catch Raina short.

Nabi was upbeat after the game, believing his fledgling unit held its own against the champion.

“It was quite a good start the first six overs from the bowlers when they were 2/16 but the batting of India is quite long. We started ok with the bat at 3/153 but Ravi Jadeja (2/38) and Ravi Ashwin (1/37) bowled very well,” said Nabi.
