FOX Sports has scored a major coup by securing the broadcast rights to Formula 1 racing in a historic five-year deal alongside Channel 10 and Foxtel, in time for the 2015 season.
In a big win for the sport’s diehard fans, Fox Sports will air the entire 2015 season lock, stock and barrel, with every race, qualifying and practice session set to be shown live and in high definition for the first time in Australia.
With just a month until the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park, Foxtel, Fox Sports and Channel 10 have combined to sign a new five-year deal for the Australian broadcast rights.
Heading into their 12th year of covering the sport, Ten will continue to show all 20 rounds of the 2015 championship on free-to-air, but only 10 of the races will be shown live.
The remainder will be shown as one-hour highlights packages at 9.30pm on ONE on the Monday night after the race in a move similar to the Ten/Fox V8 Supercars deal.
Iconic races on the F1 calendar — including the Australian and Monaco Grand Prix — will continue to be shown live on free to air under the new arrangement (scroll down for the full 2015 list).
The calendar of free-to-air races will vary from year to year.
With F1 joining V8s and MotoGP across both Ten and Fox, both sides hailed the new deal as cementing “the most extensive motorsport broadcast arrangement in history”, which will feature more F1 coverage shown on Australian TV screens than ever before.
Fox Sports, Ten, Foxtel have signed a new F1 TV rights deal from 2015.
“This new partnership means Fox Sports will broadcast F1 how it is meant to be, with every race, every qualifying and every practice live and in High Definition, making sure our subscribers won’t miss a second of the action,” Fox Sports CEO Patrick Delaney said.
Hamish McLennan, Network Ten CEO added: “Formula 1 is one of the great global sports and we are delighted to be able to extend Network Ten’s long and successful relationship with Formula One Management.
“We are also delighted to bring Fox Sports on board as our partner. The new deal is a great step forward for F1 in Australia and will ensure bigger and better coverage for motorsport fans.”
In another first for Aussie fans, Fox Sports will use the comprehensive Sky Sports coverage currently only available to UK viewers.
“With live coverage of every F1 event joining V8 Supercars and MotoGP on Fox Sports in 2015, fans will see the very best motorsport in the world, all live and in high definition,” Delaney said.
Ten will kick off its coverage of the F1 season by rolling out the big guns at the Australian GP, with 25 hours of coverage from the season-opening event at Albert Park next month.
Headlining their commitment to F1, the Australian round will be commentated by former F1 star Mark Webber, pairing with Ten’s motorsport host Matt White to lend his insights earnt through over a decade of racing at the sport’s highest level.
The new broadcast deal kicks off with both networks simulcasting the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix on March 12-15.
