THE captain of the ill-fated Costa Concordia has been sentenced to 16 years and one month in prison for his role in the shipwreck that claimed 32 lives.
Francesco Schettino, 54, was sentenced in an Italian court at the end of a 19-month trial, three years after the January 2012 disaster, which occurred after the huge cruise ship hit rocks off the Tuscan island of Giglio.
His conviction is subject to appeal.
More to come.
