Jackson Irvine scores for Burton.
SOCCEROOS midfielder Jackson Irvine has capped off a dream week with a last-gasp winner to hand battling Burton Albion a shock 1-0 win at promotion-chasing Huddersfield.
Irvine, who scored his first international goal in Australia’s 2-0 win over the UAE in Sydney on Tuesday, pounced in the 96th minute for his 10th strike of the season to give the Brewers a huge boost in their battle against relegation. Irvine, who only returned to the UK from Australia in the early hours of Thursday morning, started on the substitutes’ bench before being introduced by Burton boss Nigel Clough in the 63rd minute.
The home side dominated possession with Irvine’s Socceroos teammate Aaron Mooy, who had the benefit of five days rest after missing the UAE match due to suspension, pulling the strings in midfield.

However, they were unable to find a way past the stubborn visitors, who defended manfully despite being under huge pressure.
Just when it looked as if the Brewers had earned a well-earned point, Irvine gave them all three when he finished crisply from inside the box with what proved to be the last kick of the game.
Clough paid tribute to Irvine, who he had wanted to start the game despite a gruelling week of travel.
“After scoring for his country, Jackson was desperate to play,” Clough said. “But having flown from Iraq to the UK and to Sydney and back again and having played two games it was too much to expect him to start.
“Anybody who has been on a long flight will know how tired you are. If he had been on at the start he would probably have been too tired to make that run to score.” The defeat leaves Huddersfield 11 points off leaders Newcastle and 10 behind second-placed Brighton.

Socceroos defender Bailey Wright played the full 90 minutes for Bristol City but was unable to prevent the struggling Robins from slipping to a 2-0 defeat at mid-table Brentford.
The setback leaves City one point away from the drop zone with seven matches to play.
Australia skipper Mile Jedinak showed no ill-effects from his 30,000km round trip from Sydney to Birmingham via Tehran, by playing the whole match and helping Aston Villa to a 2-0 win over Norwich at Villa Park. Massimo Luongo missed QPR’s 1-0 defeat to Derby on Friday night after returning from Sydney less than 24 hours before the game.
Rangers manager Ian Holloway said the in-form midfielder was a big loss for his side.
“I think we missed Mass — but we couldn’t do anything about that as he didn’t return in time to play,” Holloway said.
Brad Smith was again an unused substitute for Bournemouth in Cherries 0-0 draw with local rivals Southampton.
