Was it doomed from the start?

NFL superstar Aaron Rodgers and Hollywood actress Olivia Munn shocked the world with their sudden split earlier this month.

The Green Bay Packers quarterback reportedly ended his three-year relationship with the X-Men star after a run of controversies.

The split came barely two months after engagement rumours surrounded the pair when Munn was spotted with a considerable diamond ring on her left hand.

But after a source close to the family confirmed Munn was “devastated” at the breakup, it appears the union was doomed from the start.

The pair’s relationship consistently created headlines, often because of a public family feud.

The red-hot tension in the Rodgers family was revealed when brother Jordan appeared on The Bachelorette and told the world his older brother was estranged from the family.

Rodgers’ family reportedly told the quarterback they mistrusted 36-year-old Munn, supposedly leading to a heated falling-out between the men in the family.

“The big issue is that Olivia doesn’t get along with his family. They think she’s controlling,” a source told US Weekly.

“When he got together with Olivia Munn, his family told him they didn’t trust her and thought she wasn’t with him for the right reasons. That made him furious, and he ended up choosing Olivia over his family.”

While some believed the actress was at the heart of the feud, others suggested it was a different family issue entirely.

“Olivia doesn’t really have anything to do with it,” a source previously told People Magazine. “This is not her issue — this is the Rodgers family issue. Aaron has never wanted to air this out in a public forum. He will deal with his family issues privately.”

Whether Munn was the catalyst in her former partner’s blow-up with his family remains unclear, but her pointed Instagram post after the Packers folded to a 44-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in the playoffs wouldn’t have helped.

The blockbuster disappointment ended Rodgers’ chance at a second Super Bowl title and prompted Munn to send a letter of encouragement referencing the off-field fiasco to 1.6 million followers.

“So proud of this team,” she said in a handwritten note posted to the photo sharing app. “They faced a lot of adversity on and off the field, but battled to get this far.

“Thank you to those of you who encouraged and supported them by choosing to put out only positive energy.”

The actor was then found “liking” comments on the post from fans accusing the Rodgers family of causing “negative distractions”.

Many have questioned if the star quarterback will have too much on his plate to focus on the upcoming NFL season, but former Green Bay wide receiver Greg Jennings says his old teammate is made of tougher stuff than people give him credit for.

“We’ve seen him handle so many different things over the course of his career,” Jennings said on Skip and Shannon’s Undisputed podcast.

“Even though family is different, what I saw this year was a guy who was trying to deal with a lot of things ... only he really knows what was really going on.

“I had an opportunity to talk to his brother Luke and there definitely was some issues there. But when you’re looking at a guy who can perform at this high level, the one word that comes to mind is ‘compartmentalise’ and that’s what Aaron has always been able to do.

“He’s defined what compartmentalising situations and off the field issues looks like. So when I hear it’s a distraction — it’s an issue — but he knows how to not let it become a distraction.”

Amid all the drama, it has been confirmed Rodgers and Munn “remain close friends and wish nothing but the best for each other moving forward.”
