WHILE photogenic millennials rack up six figures promoting brands while travelling the world, uploading perfectly filtered photos on Instagram, this US couple wants to show the world that you don’t have to be a size 2 to see the world.
In January, Dean and Julie Couchey, a world-travelling husband-and-wife team from upstate New York and Pennsylvania quit their jobs after tying the knot to travel the world, the New York Post reports.
The duo have now travelled to 20 countries, all documented on their blog and Instagram, Two Fat Americans. So far, their Instagram has accrued more than 1,600 followers.

“We wanted to think of a name that would be both funny and representative of who we are,” they told Travel and Leisure via email.
“Yes, we’re on the larger side, but also there is a stigma in the world that Americans are just fat people who, if they do travel, only go to the tourist spots and eat at the tourist places.
“By having a funny, catchy name, we have hopes that it will intrigue people enough to check us out and see that we couldn’t be further from that stigma. (Aside from the fat part!)”
And instead of accepting free stays and flights from hotels in exchange for coverage, the Coucheys mostly used airline miles and hotel points to travel cheaply, and saved up enough vacation days so they could be paid for a portion of their trip.

They also cut back on expenses by not eating out before their epic journey.
“We were the typical Americans that had saved many, many weeks of vacation and luckily we were able to get it paid out,” the couple said.
Dean, a 34-year-old chef, and Julie, a 28-year-old photographer, dedicated their social media to “Eating, drinking and exploring our way around the world.”
Their adventures have included noshing on $4 meals in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; wine tasting in Adelaide, Australia; and hiking in Bogotá, Colombia.

Two Fat Americans aren’t the only trailblazers championing diversity in travel blogging, there are other social-media stars breaking stereotypes about what it means to be an Instagram travel blogger.
Monique Frausto, writer of lifestyle blog Curves and Chaos, has also made a career out of breaking the stigma by being a “curvy” woman who travels, and has garnered more than 13,000 followers on her Instagram.
