A KING tide is expected to cause flooding to low-lying Brisbane suburbs this weekend, residents have been warned.

A high tide up to 2.78m will occur at the mouth of the Brisbane River until Monday, reaching 2.75m at 8.06am today, and is expected to affect bayside and riverside suburbs.

Further flooding may occur on Sunday, with storms and showers forecast for the region.

It comes after a powerful swell on the Gold Coast closed several beaches this week.

Brisbane City Council have warned of localised flooding to bayside, riverside and low-lying parts of nearby suburbs.

Areas connected to the foreshore and tide-affected areas of the river, creeks and waterways may also be affected.

Council also warned the higher-than-normal high tides would be similar to those experienced last June.

Last year’s event coincided with a powerful east coast low, which inundated the southeast and caused widespread flooding and damage.

Residents are being urged to avoid parking their car on the street, if it is prone to localised flooding.

The high tide is expected to reach a peak of 2.78m on Saturday (8.51am), 2.76m on Sunday (9.31am) and 2.71m on Monday (10.06am) at the Brisbane Bar.
