Dr Cate Shanahan, the director of the Lakers PRO Nutrition program, rises before 5am each day to begin the process of boiling large animal bones (cows, etc) with vegetables in a large pot.

She leaves it for eight hours before straining the broth and placing it in a fridge where it cools and can later be added to various soups, including Kobe’s favoured chicken tortilla recipe.

Bryant, now 36 and into his 19th NBA season, eats it daily, forcing Shanahan to prepare in advance to ensure it can be made available when he’s on the road.

“Everybody is looking for a magical elixir or some cure-all,” Lakers head strength and conditioning coach Tim DiFrancesco said. “But bone broth is where it’s at.”

Shanahan, who believes in the “magical” powers of the broth, recounts an incident in March, 2013 when Bryant badly sprained his ankle — an injury he described as his worst sprain in more than a decade.

She called the chef at the Atlanta hotel where he was staying to organise him a serving of bone broth soup and he only missed two games.

Bone broth is becoming increasingly popular in the US, with shops popping up which serve it in takeaway cups.

While Bryant drinks it for its ability to reduce joint pain and inflammation, other devotees believe it improves digestion and even makes your hair shinier.
