6.40pm — KYRGIOS OFF TO A FLYING START

NICK Kyrgios carried injury concerns into his Australian Open campaign.
You wouldn’t know it to look at him now.
The 19-year-old took out the first set against Ivo Karlovic in a tiebreak and then broke the big-serving Croat in the second for a 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 lead.
5.50pm — EMBARRASSING AIR SWING CRACKS UP KYRGIOS

NICK Kyrgios’ Australian opponent “Dr” Ivo Karlovic is one of the biggest jokers on tour.
But he wasn’t kidding when he made a complete air swing at a stock-standard smash midway through the first set of their second round match this evening.
With the score 3-2 in Kyrgios’ favour, and games going on serve, Karlovic recovered after missing the smash on the full to put it away on the bounce.
It then took Kyrgios a few moments to compose himself after breaking into laughter.
Kyrgios went on to take the first set in a tiebreak.

IT’S not something we’re accustomed to seeing in the first week of a grand slam, but Roger Federer dropped the first set 6-3 against Italy’s Simone Bolelli this afternoon.
The Swiss bounced back quickly, however, to run out a comfortable 3-6 6-3 6-2 6-2 winner.
4pm — DOUBLE AUSSIE BLOW AS MATOSEVIC, DUCKWORTH BOW OUT

THE first two Aussies in action today have now exited the tournament.
Marinko Matosevic won just eight points against Andy Murray while losing the first set 6-1 in 21 minutes, before going on to be handily beaten 6-1 6-3 6-2.
James Duckworth quickly lost the first two sets 6-2 6-3 against Richard Gasquet, struggling to make any impression on the Frenchman’s serve, and eventually lost the third 7-5.
Venus and Serena Williams have withdrawn from the doubles tournament. No official reason given yet.

3.30pm — SHARAPOVA SHOWS SHE’S A CHAMPION

MARIA Sharapova survived two match points to win an epic three-set battle with compatriot Alexandra Panova and advance to the third round.
After splitting the first two sets, Sharapova trailed 4-1 and 5-4 in the third, but made the crucial break of serve in the 10th game before charging home to win 6-1 4-6 7-5.
“I didn’t want to be out here for two and a half hours but that’s the way it sometimes goes,” Sharapova said.
Australian Evonne Goolagong was the last number two seed to exit in the second round all the way back in 1980.
Panova was playing in the second round at a Grand Slam for the first time in her career and struggled to win points on her second serve in the deciding set.
Aussie Marinko Matosevic is the second local to lose today, exiting quickly against Andy Murray 6-1 6-3 6-2.

WORLD number two Maria Sharapova is just one game away from a second round exit.
The Russian glamour girl trails unknown qualifier Alexandra Panova 4-5 in the deciding set on Rod Laver Arena having split the opening two sets.
Panova, ranked 150 in the world, upset Sorana Cirstea in round one.
Sharapova has lost in the first round at the Australian Open twice — in 2010 (to Maria Kirilenko) and on debut in 2003 (Klara Koukalova).
Last time No. 2 women's seed lost in 2nd round was Goolagong, 1980. Sharapova now a game away. (via )

WORLD No. 7 Tomas Berdych looms as a potential Aussie-killer in round four after cruising past Jurgen Melzer 7-6 6-2 6-2 this morning.
Berdych plays Serbian Viktor Troicki on Friday and if he wins will have an 75 per cent chance of facing an Aussie in round four.
Sam Groth and Thanasi Kokkinakis — who play against each other tonight — and Bernard Tomic are all in the same section of the draw. Only one can make it through to round four.
Berdych was broken early in the first set by Melzer but responded immediately and won easily the day after announcing his engagement to model Ester Satorova.

THEY swear they’re still good mates but Marinko Matosevic’s criticism of Andy Murray’s decision to hire coach Amelie Mauresmo adds an interesting subtext to their match at the Australian Open today.
Murray teamed up with the former women’s No. 1 after last year’s French Open and Matosevic didn’t hold back when asked about the move.
“I couldn’t do it because I don’t think that highly of the women’s game,” the Australian said.
“It’s all equal rights these days, politically correct. Someone’s got to give it a go, but it won’t be me.”
The pair have squared off since — at the Hopman Cup in Perth earlier this month where Murray was victorious 6-3 6-2 — and the Scot insists the comments are water under the bridge.
“He came and spoke to me immediately about it when it was in the papers and apologised, and spoke to my mum about it and apologised, and apologised to Amelie,” Murray said.
“He’s the sort of guy, he can say something and he doesn’t necessarily mean anything bad with it, if that’s his opinion. If he doesn’t want to work with a female coach then that’s absolutely fine and that’s the case with many players. I’m not offended by it and I get on absolutely fine with him.”
Matosevic is the first of six Australian men in action today.
Young stars Nick Kyrgios, Bernard Tomic and Thanasi Kokkinakis — who squares off with fellow Aussie Sam Groth — all feature in the night session.
