TRAINER Sam Kavanagh’s first order of business on Monday morning is to make sure exciting import Tales Of Grimm is among the scores of horses nominated for the $2m Doncaster Mile.
The UK-bred galloper capped off a magical day for the young trainer by overcoming a slow start to charge home and win at his Australian debut over an unsuitably short 1200m.
“I came to the races today and one of my clients said to me, ‘I can’t remember anyone who’s won with a European stayer first-up in Australia over 1200 metres’, and it started to make me a bit nervous,’’ Kavanagh said. “But I think we’re going to see a pretty good horse in a few weeks’ time once we get him to a mile.’’
Tales Of Grimm had not raced since finishing sixth in a field of 28 in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot over the mile in June last year.
“To do that today over six furlongs ... he’s never raced over this sort of trip and he’s got a fair bit of improvement in him so we’ll see where we end up,’’ Kavanagh said.

Tales Of Grimm’s heroics provided some solace for Kavanagh and his team following the death of pioneer UK-import Midsummer Sun earlier in the week.
“We put a lot of work into buying these Europeans and I’ve got some great owners supporting me,’’ Kavanagh said. “A lot of the guys in Midsummer Sun are in this horse, they’ve had a tragic week, and it’s just nice that this bloke has come out and got the job done for us today.’’
Tales Of Grimm gave Kavanagh a double after Centre Pivot brought up a hat-trick of wins earlier in the day.
Meanwhile, Brodie Loy’s rise up the ranks of Sydney’s apprentices took another step after Burbero made it back-to-back wins in the final race.
Loy gave another polished display on the Bjorn Baker-trained galloper. “He’s (Baker) put me on the map,’’ Loy said.
