Emerging destinations to see now: Havana, Hua Hin, Zagreb, Reykjavik

The Malecon drive in Havana, Cuba needs to be on your travel list.

THEY’RE the places tipped to go off and they’re quietly ramping up their tourism to welcome the rest of the world.

From lesser-known spots in Taiwan to Thailand and Croatia — if you __like seeing somewhere before everyone else does, it’s time to go now.

According to Denise Dean, TravelManagers’ personal travel manager and representative for Hendra in Queensland, Aussies are a curious bunch and are looking beyond the usual top trending destinations.

“Travellers are after destinations which will give them a cultural hit, to mix in with the locals if they want to for experiences they won’t get just anywhere,” she says.

“If you step off the beaten track, you are going to create unforgettable lifetime experiences and memories.”

Dean says that it’s time to start planning now with many of these spots already planning a huge tourism push.

“The countries themselves are investing in their tourism by ramping their flights to cater for the growth. For example, Icelandair is opening new routes to increase their services, and improving their stopover programs to cater for the influx of travellers.”

1. KAOHSIUNG, TAIWAN

Taiwan will wow you with its sophistication, culture, history, people, scenery, shopping and dining. Kaohsiung is Taiwan’s other big city, it’s the gateway to the wonders of the world as you delve further inland. You’ll be glad you came.

2. REYKJAVIK, ICELAND

Getting more popular now and will be popular in years to come. This city is ready for the global stage, as more and more products __like cruises include Iceland on their itineraries.

Culture, art, musical acts together with its extreme and dramatic terrain, geothermal pools and chance to see the Northern Lights are a lure enough to put Iceland on your wish list.

3. HUA HIN, THAILAND

If you crave a beach getaway far from the crowds of the large cities, here is the place to soak up the sun, sand and gleaming beaches.

Take a 2.5 hour transfer from Bangkok and you arrive at Hua Hin with its fancy hotels to take care of your every whim. Take a leaf out of the Royal family’s book, they have been holidaying there since the 1920s.

4. ZAGREB, CROATIA

Here is a city waiting to be discovered. It’s a hot destination for those looking for fun and history in either summer or winter, it’s sure to impress. Close to the ski slopes too. The local squares and markets are classically European, and the food is influenced from the local regions, always good with a glass of red.

5. LUXURY CANAL BARGE CRUISING THROUGH FRANCE

You’ve heard of river cruising, and now there is an emerging trend for luxury barge boats cruising along the picturesque canals and rivers throughout Alsace and Champagne.
